Player four is required to hand over all jacks in their hand to player one. If you receive a card from another player, you can continue asking that player for cards. A player must draw a card from the deck pile when they do not receive the card they asked for from their opponent.
If they happen to draw the exact card that they asked for, they must hold it up for other players to see, and then they may take another turn. A variation as I remember it: Players can lay down a 3 of a kind and upon drawing the fourth could close the book. If an opponent held or drew the fourth card, he could lay it down in front of himself to close the book.
We also asked for the card of everyone at once. My three 3s gave me 9 and your 3 gave you 3 if it was laid in front of yourself to close my book. I remember we called the game "Fish," after the the instruction to "fish" if the requested card was not available to be given. Before the game officially begins, the job of dealer must be assigned to one of the players. To decide who is dealer, every player receives 1 card from a shuffled deck of cards. The players assemble in a circle and the dealer shuffles the cards. If less than 4 people are playing, each player receives 7 cards.
If more that 4 people are playing, each player receives 5 cards. If the player does have the type of card asked for, they must give the asker all of that type they possess. The asker then continues questioning the same or a different player if they have another or the same type of card. The gameplay then moves to the left and the next person fishes for cards. A player makes a book when they have 4 of a kind. When a book is made, the player places the 4 cards face up in a pile in front of them to verify to the other players that they made a book.
The game ends when all 13 books are made. The player with the most books wins.
