Though DirectX 10 is Vista-only, many a gamer has sworn not to upgrade; will XP SP3 cement their decision, or has Vista and its drivers matured enough to change a few minds? XP SP3. This site may earn affiliate commissions from the links on this page.
Most games work on Vista just fine, at least as well as they work in Windows XP. There are a few oddities with regards to some games and services not showing up in the Games Explorer, and a gotcha here and there most of which can be solved by choosing to run the application as administrator. On the whole, while Vista is going through the normal teething pains of a new OS, the games compatibility thing seems like a non-issue for most people. Both Nvidia cards used the ForceWare In Windows XP, we used For the ATI card we used Catalyst 7.
We will test at three resolution settings. This high-res, high-quality setting should be mostly limited by the graphics hardware memory bandwidth and fill rate and less by whatever CPU overhead exists in the driver. As for DX9, I don't see any performance hits at all unless you're staring at the frame-rate meter. There's no reason why you shouldn't play a game at 80fps on Vista as opposed to 90fps on XP for example. I wouldn't listen to the Vista basher when they argue game speed.
They're speed freaks, not gamers. Gamers enjoy their games, not spend every waking moment trying to get one more FPS out of it so they could brag about it. Joined Aug 3, Messages 1, The last comparison I saw was back in September and by then the differences were minimal. For example, in the Case of Quake Wars while running at x Vista 64 runs exactly one half of a frame per second slower than XP. Demon Supreme [H]ardness. Joined Feb 3, Messages I would have to say as time progresses and 64 bit applications start being the norm you will certainly gain some benefits in running a 64 bit OS. Vista 64 is now my primary OS for my desktop and my laptop is Vista I have seen some benchmarks where Crysis performs a little better in the 64 bit environment versus 32, sorry I don't have the link to reference from.
But overall I found 64 vista runs a lot better, faster loading times, able to use more ram, etc. If you have 4gb of ram go for it, and vista 32 and 64 driver support is almost comparable as they are being developed in parallel. Met-AL Supreme [H]ardness.
