Bug fixes. Backup settings are retained when logging in as a different user. Compatibility with MalwareBytes AntiExploit. Minor graphical fixes. Added Hardened the scan progress against active rootkits.
Hijacked desktop backgrounds are now reset automatically on Windows XP after the cleanup completes. Detection for a new set of VBScript threats. Improved Scanning of locked files. Cleanup of active threats to avoid reboots. Free Antivirus These three did all the heavy lifting. To check the Internet Connection shield, I tried to re-download my current set of malware samples.
Site Guard, Spyware Doctor's parallel feature, also blocked half of the bad sites. Some of the suites did better. When I tried to launch local copies of the malware samples, the Execution shield blocked over half of them. It cut them off so thoroughly that Windows reported an attempt to launch a non-existent file. All of those that did manage to launch were quashed by the File System shield at some point during the installation.
The File System shield wasn't always totally successful at preventing installation: If the malware installer managed to place any executables on the system, I gave WAVAS half credit. WAVAS scored an impressive 9. That's decent, considering that the average for all products tested is 5.
I do give a lot less weight to this test: If somebody is sitting at your desk installing a keylogger, you've got problems no software tool can fix.
Earlier this year I retested that version with the current set of malware samples to get a comparative figures for my Spyware Doctor review. The only score that didn't improve going from version 5. The spyware removal score rose from 8. That dubious benefit is no longer part of the product.
See my review of WISE for a full description of this backup bonus. Both products were unusually thorough in their malware cleanup, but Spyware Doctor took a ridiculously long time to get the job done. More Antispyware Reviews:.
Excellent 4. It isn't the fastest scanner, but it's much faster than Spyware Doctor. It's very effective both at clearing out malware infestations and at keeping clean systems clean. Webroot's offering is our Editors Choice for standalone antispyware. Pros Removed almost all traces of sample malware. Comes with 1GB of online backup as a bonus; also local backup.

Most security vendors offer a range of products, from simple antivirus to sub-suite to a full-blown top-of-the-line security suite. Normally I just review the full suite. There aren't enough hours in the day to consider all the variations from each vendor separately. Though the suite itself isn't outstanding, the malware-fighting component merits our Editors' Choice for standalone antispyware.
That being the case, I didn't need to go through the lengthy process of running all of my tests over again. I did run a few for a sanity check, and the results precisely matched those of WISE.
However, Webroot licenses its antivirus technology from Sophos. And since Webroot AntiVirus uses all the features of the Sophos engine, the company feels the product's results should match those of Sophos Endpoint Security, an enterprise-specific product.
That's not necessarily good. It attained the Advanced rating on a signature-based test, but again with false positives. I installed Webroot AntiVirus with AntiSpyware 6 as part of Webroot Internet Security Essentials on a collection of virtual machines infested with many kinds of malware, including adware, spyware, rootkits, Trojans, worms, and rogue antispyware. Webroot's memory sweep at the end of installation removed traces of about two-thirds of the samples, but the full scan invariably found more traces to clean up.
A few threats interfered with my ability to install the product or run a scan, but installing and scanning in Safe Mode solved those problems. And when the malware removal process disabled network connectivity on two systems, I just had Windows repair the connection.
That's pretty simple. Webroot's scanner is not the fastest. It took 45 minutes to scan my standard clean test system, and longer on malware-infested systems. The average is closer to 30 minutes, and some do the job in even less time.
On the other hand, Spyware Doctor with AntiVirus 6 took much, much longer—as much as 2 hours on some malware-infested systems. WAVAS didn't miss a single malware sample. It detected every one and removed the essential executable files for almost all of them.
